132 - Can You Keep A Secret?

Ritual: Can You Keep A Secret?

Cost: 3 significant charges.

Ritual Action: Is there something you never want to come to light? Let two other people in on it. No one else, if the information spreads beyond two other people the ritual is ruined before it even starts. You could also cast this ritual using one or two people who know the secret incidentally. Then they both have to die. It doesn’t have to be your doing, that’d be pretty horrid, maybe pick people with a terminal illnesses to confide in. Go to their funerals and observe from a distance, dressed in black and standing under an umbrella. If anyone approaches you leave without speaking and return after dark.

The evening of each funeral go to the graves and drink a toast to the buried secret. Leave behind the glass, the alcohol, an arrangement of three roses and a note which - however cryptically - alludes to the nature of the shared secret. Some versions of the ritual indicate this action needs to become an annual tradition to maintain the ritual and that doing so allows it to be passed on to a third party, so long as the other conditions are still met.

Effect: So long as you don’t tell anyone your secret it is safe from mundane discovery by those who don't already know it. No one will pay any attention to your mother’s mouldering corpse in her rocking chair or those financial irregularities will continue to go unnoticed whenever your company does an audit. It can still be uncovered magickally. If more than one other person ever learns the secret (through magick or blabbing) the ritual protection is broken and it’s open season. Same thing happens if you die.

You can increase the number of people the ritual can bear before breaking by becoming the sole bearer of someone else’s secret. So long as it that secret known only to you and them the limit increases by one, even if they aren’t alive anymore. The buttressing secret needs to be of comparable importance, GM adjudication of what qualifies should be handled secretly.
