Unusual occurrences in nature draw attention and the human need to work a narrative for everything usually ascribes supernatural influence to the most extreme examples. Rat Kings are an example of this: rats clustered together in grime and filth become entangled by their tails forming a hideous gestalt which dies quickly and painfully as they struggle to eat, avoid predators and clean themselves. As a bad omen rat kings are associated with plague, most likely because the elements that give rise to their formation (in the cases that they aren’t hoaxes) are the same ones in which the fruits of disease and poor healthcare run rampant.
In areas with a high level of magickal pollution similar entanglements form. Wallowing in the metaphysical filth of repeatedly abusing the fabric of reality, willworkers, ritualists and avatars find that the results of their efforts begin to overlap. A ritual fizzles unexpectedly, only to have its effects fire off when a nearby adept tries to level a blast at somebody. In return the lost blast manifests when the ritualist glowers at someone or while an avatar is trying to channel their archetype at a person. As conditions deteriorate these occurrences become more frequent and extreme. At their worst groups of the magickally inclined find their entire repertoire is dysfunctional and are bound to experience each other’s magick even if they leave the area.
Fixing the problem involves treating it like a public sanitation issue. Sometimes it’s a specific monster or artifact wreaking havoc on the location that needs to be run off and doing so will set things right. Other times it’s more complicated, the built up consequences of laissez faire “do what thou will” hands-off occult policy coming home to roost. In that case fixing your magickal misfires is a case of convincing people on a regional level to be more circumspect with their magick use. Use the objective rules in that case.
